Multiple reasons for replacement
There are plenty of good reasons to replace your traditional manually operated shutter ribbon winder with an automated model. An automated winder can free up a surprising amount of time each day to spend on more useful and pleasant things.
The more shutters you have, the more time you will save. Think about it: even if it only takes you five minutes per day to roll up all of your shutters and another five minutes to lower them, that still means you lose about 60 hours per year. That equates to 600 hours over a period of 10 years, leap days not included. Replacing them would certainly add to your daily comfort.
As you age, you may notice you no longer have the strength to operate the shutters each day. However, there’s no need to move to a rest-home or a nursing centre yet. Replacing the traditional manually controlled shutters with an automated model may just be one of those things which will enable you to continue living at home longer.
Automatic winders can also be used to simulate your presence in the home. For instance, when you are away, the shutters can be programmed to open in the morning and close at night.
Automatic shutter ribbon winders
A traditional shutter ribbon winder winds up the ribbon on a roller, which is equipped with a spring. This part is built into the wall. With an automated version, a small motor winds up the shutter ribbon. This is designed so that it takes up no more room than a traditional winder. The ribbon is still wound up inside the wall, albeit around a motor shaft.
In addition, automatic winders feature a display. Shutters can be controlled by pressing some keys on the cover. You can also program timers to have the shutters pulled up and down at pre-set times. Most of the more advanced models (slightly more expensive) have a day-length and seasonal function, or can be connected to a light sensor. In these cases, the shutters will be operated depending on the pre-set times and the degree of brightness.
In most cases, the automated winders are equipped with a soft-start and soft-stop action to smooth out the operation of the shutters. When you’re not at home, a memory function can be activated to repeat the actions of the past 24 hours. Useful when you want to simulate your presence.
Some brands also offer the capability to control your shutters via an app on your smartphone or tablet. In such cases, the winder is operated via a control unit using RF (radiofrequency). The control unit receives the smartphone’s or tablet’s commands via WiFi and transforms them into RF signals. Of course, the winder still requires 230V tension.
The automated winder requires a power connection, which is easily tackled. The electrical cord with a plug is connected to the winder, and the plug is simply plugged in into a power socket.
