Alloys in the Marine Environment CPD

CPD-accredited In-House Technical Workshop

This workshop will provide engineers with a unique opportunity to overview the behaviour of the copper-based alloys, stainless steels and nickel alloys, which provide a range of corrosion resistance, mechanical strengths and biofouling properties in the marine environment. An understanding will be gained of the requirements to achieve long term performance.

Copper Development Association and Nickel Institute jointly sponsor the event, which is accredited for two hours of CPD by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Anyone involved in the design, specification, fabrication and operation of materials in contact with seawater and the marine environment in the following industries:

Overview of metals and their relative resistance to seawater, covering general and localised corrosion, velocity effects, de-alloying, stress-cracking, galvanic behaviour and biofouling.

Stainless Steels and High Nickel Alloys – Mike Davies, Nickel Institute
Details of alloy grades, relative corrosion resistance, metallurgy and selection guidelines.

Copper-Nickel Alloys in Marine Environments – Carol Powell, CDA
Copper-nickel is the most widely used copper alloy for seawater handling. Important points are considered to ensure successful application.

Nickel Aluminium Bronze  Ivan Richardson, Copper Alloys Ltd
Discusses these complex alloys that can provide high strength and antigalling, plus high corrosion and cavitation resistance. Common applications include pumps, valves and propellers.

Copper Alloys – Andrew Drage, CDA
Overview of traditional marine alloys: bronze, brass, gunmetals and copper-beryllium.
