EU Initiatives and Regulations

The European Copper Institute (ECI) monitors and contributes to the EU legislative agenda on issues relevant for copper. Backed up by the advocacy umbrella of Eurometaux, our policy agenda stretches across the economy and competitiveness, innovation and health, safety and environmental protection and renewable energies.

In this section, you will find examples of public policy issues that relate to copper and the copper industry, as well as the positions that ECI is supporting through its network in Brussels.

Compliance with IMO New Guidance

In 2012, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) adopted new guidance to cover the development of more systematic hazard assessments for solid bulk cargoes. ECI led a project to help the global copper industry (producers, traders and customers) meet these obligations under  MARPOL Annex V, designed to prevent pollution of the marine environment, and secondly, under the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC), to ensure the safe transport of solid bulk cargoes.

Since early 2008, European Copper Institute (ECI) has provided leadership and secretariat services to the REACH Copper Consortium, a standalone business venture open to all potential REACH registrants. Its objective is to maximise the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of its members’ efforts to meet their obligations.
