Areas of Focus
Whether it is to improve the efficiency and performance of applications across energy and healthcare, or to make transportation, architecture and heating and cooling systems more environmental friendly, copper products have never been more important for the sustainable growth of the European Union.
Through the activities of ECI and Eurometaux, the European copper industry is committed to working with the EU institutions to help meet high-level objectives on issues such as climate change, resource efficiency and the re-industrialisation of Europe. At the same time, the industry needs policies and actions that safeguard its competitiveness and the employment that it generates. Key issues include the Emissions Trading Scheme, REACH implementation and energy pricing.
The EU and national governments are adopting increasingly complex regulations covering, for example, consumer and environmental protection, occupational health and safety, industrial processes and the transport of metal-containing wastes. ECI is committed to working with regulators to ensure that these regulations provide fair treatment for copper production plus market access for its products. One of ECI’s core competencies is to use the vast array of historical research on copper’s impacts on the environment and on human health to fill key data-gaps through independent research and to consolidate these findings into useful communications.
The Copper Voluntary Risk Assessment and the REACH dossier are the most extensive and up-to-date assessments available anywhere in the world. It is important and resource efficient, for both the industry and for policy makers and regulators around the world, to base future regulations and standards on these.
